Enjoy the food. Savor the conversation.

This response to last week’s infamous reduction in star for DANIEL is a smidge long but well worth getting to the bottom and reading what Amanda Cohen from Dirt Candy has to say.  I like her.  She’s funny.

Chefs, Restaurateurs and Writers on VIP Treatment

Last week, New York Times critic Pete Wells knocked Daniel down from four stars to three. In the piece, Wells explained that during the review process he had arranged for a colleague to dine at the restaurant at the same time. That plan, according to the critic, ended up revealing a discrepancy between the level of service given to Wells and the unidentified colleague — one that merited a demotion. “I knew my servers were trying to make my night one I’d recall with a smile,” Wells wrote. “And I wished everyone could be so lucky.”  READ MORE

Former Chef de Cuisine at French Laundry, Tim Hollingsworth has confirmed future LA Restaurant

Tim Hollingsworth, former chef de cuisine at Thomas Keller’s French Laundry in Napa, has confirmed that he is opening a new restaurant in Los Angeles, although the eatery has yet to be named and he’s still developing the concept. Hollingsworth has been consulting on all of Michael Zislis’ locations along the South Bay (Circa, The Strand House), and is currently working on revamping the menus at the restaurateur’s Shade Hotel in Manhattan Beach. While the location of Hollingsworth’s project is tba, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the chef open with the Zislis Group somewhere out by the beach.  READ MORE

Nature’s Not In It: Naked Juice Forced to Remove “All Natural” From Its Labels

Pepsi’s popular Naked Juice line has been forced to strip the words “all natural” from its labels after a class-action suit determined the claim was misleading and false

Naked Juice Co. agreed to pay $9 million to settle the suit, which was brought by a group of consumers who alleged the juices and smoothies could not be called natural and GMO-free. Under the terms of the settlement, Naked Juice can continue to deny that they misled the public, but they are changing the labels nonetheless. READ MORE

I’m so utterly confused by the uproar over this.  But I do think the commercial and this video are damn cute!

Kids Baffled Over Racist Backlash Over Cheerios Commercial

This video, a wide-eyed take on the “controversial” Cheerios commercial, is proof that kids don’t know how to be racist until they’re taught to be racist.

Last month when Cheerios released an ad that featured a biracial family, commenters went ballistic, posting racist rants on the company’s YouTube page.

Cheerios shut down the comments section underneath the ad and rightfully stood by the commercial in their public statement: “At Cheerios, we know there are all kinds of families and we celebrate them all.”

But when these children watched the commercial, they didn’t understand why it was a big deal at all. The racial implications of it had to be explained to them.

“I thought Martin Luther King fixed this already,” said one.

The video, made by The Fine Bros., went viral this week, which isn’t suprising considering how much the Trayvon Martin case has become a part of our daily conversation.

While this video may feature children, it shows much more than an innocent perspective on race; it shows a fair and just one.
