Bon Appetit Announces Ten Best New Restaurants 2013
After announcing fifty finalists last week, Bon Appétit has released restaurant editor Andrew Knowlton’s list of the ten best new restaurants in America. According to Knowlton, the list skews young: he “discovered a dining scene that is being reinvented by a band of young chefs (33 is the average age on this list), and one that knows no creative or geographic boundaries. These men and women have inspired me, and I know that they’ll inspire you, too.”
Making the number one position on the list is Alma, the Los Angeles restaurant from young chef Ari Taymor, of whom Knowlton writes, “Despite his age and relative inexperience, this guy is cooking on a level I rarely see or taste.” Also on the list: Joshua Skenes’ Saison reboot in San Francisco, Rolf & Daughters pasta palace in Nashville, Macanese food in Chicago at Fat Rice, and many more.
Here is the full list: The 10 Best New Restaurants in America 2013

2. Saison, San Francisco, California

Can’t go wrong with 50% off pretty much anything at Dean & Deluca!
Bon Appetit just released their 50 best restaurants in the country. They will narrow this down to a Top 10 on August 14th and then name the best one. I’m sure all of that will be great but until then, all I really care about are these five restaurants here in LA. You already know that Hinoki & the Bird is one of my faves. But there is another on this list who JUST MIGHT cook for an upcoming Eat+Drink Supper Club event. Keep an eye out!

I love that Ikea does stuff like this. They’re having a crayfish party which apparently is some sort of Swedish phenomenon. This is happening here in LA on August 16th…just in case you haven’t had enough crayfish this year. :)
Well this looks like fun over Labor Day weekend…should we go? :)
Don’t have plans Labor Day weekend? Now you do. Head over to LA Times | The Taste food and wine festival, August 30 to September 1, at Paramount Pictures Studios. Sip and sample your way through Paramount’s backlot as you get to know L.A.’s most-talked about restaurants and chefs.
On Opening Night, enjoy a soirée where chefs, bartenders, and event hosts will mingle with a more intimate crowd. If the farmers market is your favorite spot, become an expert in seasonal dishes at Russ Parsons and Michael Cimarusti’s Field To Fork on Saturday, August 31. Make it an all day affair and tour L.A.’s eclectic restaurants one bite at a time at Jonathan Gold and Sang Yoon’s Flavors of L.A. on Saturday evening. READ MORE
Don’t Drink Russian Vodka! From Eater:
Bars Boycott Russian Vodka Over Anti-Gay Laws
In the wake of new Russian laws that persecute homosexuality (more on that here), bars across the US have begun to boycott Russian vodka. The movement was popularized by columnist Dan Savage in Seattle’s The Stranger, who writes: “There is something we can do right here, right now, in Seattle and other US cities to show our solidarity with Russian queers and their allies and to help to draw international attention to the persecution of gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, trans people, and straight allies in Putin’s increasingly fascistic Russia: DUMP RUSSIAN VODKA.” And lo, bars have begun dumping Russian vodka.
Eater has a listing of upcoming Wine & Food festivals. Here in LA, the LA Food & Wine Festival runs Aug 22-25. I’m thinking I’ll be there. Will you?
Los Angeles Food & Wine Festival
When: August 22 - August 25, 2013
Where: Los Angeles, CA
What: Big names like Grant Achatz, Rick Bayless, Scott Conant, Giada De Laurentiis, Susan Feniger, Duff Goldman, Edward Lee, Mary Sue Milliken, Masaharu Morimoto, Charles Phan, and more are all planning to participate in this year’s Los Angeles Food & Wine Festival. Events here include an Asian night market with Iron Chef Morimoto, a cocktail demo from Achatz, and something called Bacon & Bourbon that probably needs no further explanation.

I have to go here soon JUST to figure out what this bowl of white bubbles is!!!!
This is a fascinating little piece in Eater about how restaurant critics go about trying to get a REAL interpretation of the food and service at a restaurant. It’s quite difficult when they know who you are!!
New York Times Critic, Pete Wells, Drops DANIEL to 3 Stars, Uses Decoy
In this week’s review, New York Times critic Pete Wells took a star away from chef Daniel Boulud’s 20 year old flagship restaurant, Daniel. (The last time Daniel was reviewed by the Times it got four stars from Frank Bruni back in 2009.) In his review, Wells finds fault with both the food and the service at the long-time four star restaurant. In a sneaky move, Wells — who’s not exactly anonymous — used a decoy. He dined 15 minutes apart from one of his more anonymous colleagues and compared his experience to that of a standard diner. His findings were informative. READ MORE
