Enjoy the food. Savor the conversation.

Well this looks like fun over Labor Day weekend…should we go?  :)

LA Times - The Taste

Don’t have plans Labor Day weekend? Now you do. Head over to LA Times | The Taste food and wine festival, August 30 to September 1, at Paramount Pictures Studios. Sip and sample your way through Paramount’s backlot as you get to know L.A.’s most-talked about restaurants and chefs.

On Opening Night, enjoy a soirée where chefs, bartenders, and event hosts will mingle with a more intimate crowd. If the farmers market is your favorite spot, become an expert in seasonal dishes at Russ Parsons and Michael Cimarusti’s Field To Fork on Saturday, August 31. Make it an all day affair and tour L.A.’s eclectic restaurants one bite at a time at Jonathan Gold and Sang Yoon’s Flavors of L.A. on Saturday evening.  READ MORE

Gawker posted the new Mumford & Sons video which I know has nothing to do with eating or drinking but is so damn funny, I had to post.  I mean, every music video needs Jason Sudekis, Jason Bateman, Will Forte and Ed Helms.  “Hopeless Wanderer” is the latest single off their second studio album Babel.  Happy Monday!

Tasting Table did this great post on Rose Lawrence and her Red Bread establishment.  I love it when someone starts small and just blows up!

Our Daily Bread

Is there anything Rose Lawrence can’t do?

Between baking organic pastries, canning locally sourced jams and pickles, and delivering weekly loaves of fresh-baked bread via bicycle, the owner of Red Bread is on a personal mission to transform Westside pantries.

Lawrence and her husband, David, have long held a presence at the Santa Monica Farmers’ Market, where they sell out almost every week. With their new brick-and-mortar bakery and café in Culver City, the couple hopes to spread the gospel of wholesome baked goods even further.

Gather a few friends for breakfast to enjoy the café’s tea service for four ($50), which includes a wide selection of the day’s pastries and sandwiches: cracked oatmeal cookies studded with TCHO chocolate ($2), fig-filled “jammy newtons” ($2), soft Montreal-style bagels ($3), French toast challah ($3), and soft sourdough tartines topped with house-cured gravlax or bacon ($7).  READ MORE

New York City is going CRAZY for CRONUTS!!!!

Chef Ansel Makes CRONUTS on Jimmy Fallon

New York pastry chef/international cronut king Dominique Ansel went on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon to make his signature pastry last night: “I’m going to show you in two minutes what we do in three days.” Fallon can hardly contain himself, practically squealing when Ansel dumps a huge slab of butter on the Cronut dough. At least Questlove — who introduced Fallon to the pastry — proves useful, earning an Ansel seal of approval on his fry job. (Questlove knows a thing or two about frying.)

Hahahaha…excellent!!

LA Restaurant Bans Cell Phones to Prevent Gastro ADD

Brand-new Los Angeles restaurant Bucato is cracking down on kids these days and their cell phones. Usage of mobile devices will only be allowed outside in “designated cell phone areas,” and photography in general is “politely discouraged.” Per their website:

It is our intention that you enjoy your time with us, savoring both your meal and your company. We kindly ask that you refrain from using your mobile device within the dining area. All photography within Bucato is politely discouraged. Thank you.   READ MORE

Lola’s was THE JOINT back in the day when I lived around the corner and could literally walk there.  I barely understood it at the time.  Maybe the Laurel Hardware crew can breathe life into it.

Laurel Hardware Team in Escrow to Take Lola’s in Weho

Do you have a love/hate relationship with white hot West Hollywood haunt Laurel Hardware for its aesthetic appeal, but annoyingly long lines?

Eater LA Heat Map

More often than not, tipsters, readers, friends and family of Eater have one question: Where should I eat right now? Restaurant obsessives want to know what’s new, what’s hot, which favorite chef just launched a sophomore effort. And while the Eater 38 is a crucial resource covering old standbys and neighborhood essentials across the city, it is not a chronicle of the ‘it’ places of the moment. Thus, we offer the Eater Heatmap, which will change continually to always highlight where the foodie crowds are flocking to at the moment.

Don’t Drink Russian Vodka! From Eater:

Bars Boycott Russian Vodka Over Anti-Gay Laws

In the wake of new Russian laws that persecute homosexuality (more on that here), bars across the US have begun to boycott Russian vodka. The movement was popularized by columnist Dan Savage in Seattle’s The Stranger, who writes: “There is something we can do right here, right now, in Seattle and other US cities to show our solidarity with Russian queers and their allies and to help to draw international attention to the persecution of gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, trans people, and straight allies in Putin’s increasingly fascistic Russia: DUMP RUSSIAN VODKA.” And lo, bars have begun dumping Russian vodka.

I LOVE UrbanDaddy!!!

I think they have some of the funniest email blasts ever.  Here is the one the sent for the just-about-to-open Bucato in Culver City. I have to go now JUST because of this email.

From Urban Daddy Los Angeles: You probably didn’t dream about pasta last night.

Probably.

But if you did, it might’ve looked a little something like Bucato, a towering shrine to the magical possibilities of flour meeting water. It’s from Rustic Canyon chef Evan Funke—and it’s finally, finally opening Wednesday.

And when Wednesday happens, here’s what you’ll do. 1) Dramatically cancel all Wednesday meetings. 2) Program 310-876-0286 into your phone. 3a) Do some light phone stretches starting around 9:15am—repeatedly curl your dialing finger, that sort of thing. 3b) 9:30am. The phone lines open. And Bucato will only accept same-day reservations. So… procure same-day reservations. 4) Take a moment to silently congratulate yourself on correctly living life.

And then… 5) You’ll walk into the bright light of what could only be called pasta heaven. Two patios. A bunch of knives plunged deep into a towering white wall, their handles making the shape of California. A chandelier made out of rolling pins. And a glass-encased pasta lab upstairs, where things that aren’t noodles become noodles. This lab is doing important work.

So yeah, business lunch. Alfresco wine date. Quick dinner. Special-occasion dinner. It’s all happening here, over squash blossoms, nectarines and fresh strascinati… or tagliatelle with pigeon ragù.

Yes, it’s exactly what you think it is.
